Description: This data is a GIS dataset for the vegetation natural communities for Martha's Vineyard Island, Massachusetts. It was produced as part of a program to update the vegetation mapping for Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket Islands. The vegetation communities were mapped/classified per the Classification of the Natural Communities of Massachusetts (published by Natural Heritage Endangered Species Program, Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, March, 2020). The vegetation communities were mapped from aerial imagery collected in 2021, using primarily direct visual inspection of the aerial imagery and manual digitization, with some use of automated image classification tools. Additionally, some ground truthing was undertaken by local knowledgeable biologists/ecologists and where discrepancies were identified during the ground truthing, the community mapping was updated as needed. The minimum mapping unit is 0.25acres.Source data referenced for this mapping project included:MassGIS 2021 Aerial Imagery (leaf-off)NAIP National Agriculture Imagery Program 2021 (leaf-on)LiDAR 2021 (20 points per square meter) The LiDAR were collected during this MassGIS/USGS flight but a local 'buy-up' was implemented to get the 20ppm point density. Please see this companion document for full details regarding attributes, data schema, and domain values.Download a zip file containing several legend files for use in ArcPro (3.3.2 or newer). Using these isn't required but it might save you a lot of time. This mapping effort was funded by a grant from the MA Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) program to support initiatives identified in the The Vineyard Way - Climate Action Plan. The project was coordinated by the Martha's Vineyard Commission (Chris Seidel [she/her] - GIS Coordinator) and GIS work completed by Thomson Environmental Consultants of Guildford, England (Steve Wagstaff - Project Manager). Local conservation groups who provided ground-truthing include (in no particular order): (1) Martha's Vineyard Land Bank Commission, (2) Sheriff's Meadow Foundation, (3) The Nature Conservancy, (4) The Trustees of Reservations, (5) Polly Hill Arboretum, (6) Vineyard Conservation Society, (7) Mass Audubon, (8) BiodiversityWorks, (9) Vineyard Open Land Foundation, (10) Woodwell Climate Research Center, and (11) The Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head Aquinnah. This recent mapping effort is a complete update of the vegetation mapping undertaken by The Nature Conservancy and UMass Amherst (publ. circa 2000 based on aerial photos from 1994). For a copy of that earlier vegetation data, please reach out to The Nature Conservancy (jessica.dietrich@TNC.ORG)Updates since Oct. 2024 release: Late Fall of 2024 and Jan/Feb of 2025 -- received updates from Sheriff's Meadow Foundation and Martha's Vineyard Landbank ecologists based on detailed plant inventory field work conducted on some of their properties. Major updates to Squibnocket Pond Reservation. SMF & MVLB assigned the final NHESP Community Code and supplied new polygon geometries for the respective areas. The MVC inserted those new polygons and conflated all remaining attributes based on the revised final NHESP code.
