Display Field: gridcode

Type: Feature Layer

Geometry Type: esriGeometryPolygon

Description: The Island's 'Habitat Blocks' were compiled from a) National Wetlands Inventory, b) Land conserved in perpetuity , c) BioMap Core Habitats (regional & local), d) Streams with 100ft buffer (isolated not abutting habitat blocks), and e) Certified Vernal Pools with 1000ft buffer.A Road Intensity (of use) Dataset was assembled factoring in: a) Number of Commercial Owners and Non-Commercial Owners of developed parcels along road, b) Road Class (i.e. Primary, Secondary, etc.), c) Road Surface (paved or non-paved), and d) Road accessed for Beach, Trail, Boat Launch. A Landscape Resistance Dataset was compiled which assigned a cost value (1 to 10) for each species indicating ease of traversing landscape). Four input resistance raster were created and then merged into one final landscape resistance raster: 1) Land Use/Land Cover categories (MassGIS 2016), 2) Vegetation Natural Communities (2024 Thomson Environmental Consultants, MVC, and Nantucket Conservation Foundation), 3) Road Intensity Buffered (each category was buffered X feet), and 4) Streams Buffered (abutting habitat blocks). The Linkage Mapper spatial analysis was run in ArcPro and the output Least Cost Paths where they presently exist (low resistance) & where needed. The 'Wildlife Corridors' are the lower 3 categories from the Quantile classification. Corridors were buffered 100 meters on each side of the linkage path, producing a 200 meter wildlife corridor area. The upper, 4th category, from the Quantile classification are linkages that need habitat &/or engineering improvements to make them viable connectors. This latter category is useful to focus future landscape improvement projects.
