Description: This data is a GIS dataset for the vegetation natural communities for Martha's Vineyard Island, Massachusetts. It was produced as part of a program to update the vegetation mapping for Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket Islands. The vegetation communities were mapped/classified per the Classification of the Natural Communities of Massachusetts (published by Natural Heritage Endangered Species Program, Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, March, 2020). The vegetation communities were mapped from aerial imagery collected in 2021, using primarily direct visual inspection of the aerial imagery and manual digitization, with some use of automated image classification tools. Additionally, some ground truthing was undertaken by local knowledgeable biologists/ecologists and where discrepancies were identified during the ground truthing, the community mapping was updated as needed. The minimum mapping unit is 0.25acres.Source data referenced for this mapping project included:MassGIS 2021 Aerial Imagery (leaf-off)NAIP National Agriculture Imagery Program 2021 (leaf-on)LiDAR 2021 (20 points per square meter) The LiDAR were collected during this MassGIS/USGS flight but a local 'buy-up' was implemented to get the 20ppm point density. Please see this companion document for full details regarding attributes, data schema, and domain values.Download a zip file containing several legend files for use in ArcPro (3.3.2 or newer). Using these isn't required but it might save you a lot of time. This mapping effort was funded by a grant from the MA Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) program to support initiatives identified in the The Vineyard Way - Climate Action Plan. The project was coordinated by the Martha's Vineyard Commission (Chris Seidel [she/her] - GIS Coordinator) and GIS work completed by Thomson Environmental Consultants of Guildford, England (Steve Wagstaff - Project Manager). Local conservation groups who provided ground-truthing include (in no particular order): (1) Martha's Vineyard Land Bank Commission, (2) Sheriff's Meadow Foundation, (3) The Nature Conservancy, (4) The Trustees of Reservations, (5) Polly Hill Arboretum, (6) Vineyard Conservation Society, (7) Mass Audubon, (8) BiodiversityWorks, (9) Vineyard Open Land Foundation, (10) Woodwell Climate Research Center, and (11) The Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head Aquinnah. This recent mapping effort is a complete update of the vegetation mapping undertaken by The Nature Conservancy and UMass Amherst (publ. circa 2000 based on aerial photos from 1994). For a copy of that earlier vegetation data, please reach out to The Nature Conservancy (jessica.dietrich@TNC.ORG)Updates since Oct. 2024 release: Late Fall of 2024 and Jan/Feb of 2025 -- received updates from Sheriff's Meadow Foundation and Martha's Vineyard Landbank ecologists based on detailed plant inventory field work conducted on some of their properties. Major updates to Squibnocket Pond Reservation. SMF & MVLB assigned the final NHESP Community Code and supplied new polygon geometries for the respective areas. The MVC inserted those new polygons and conflated all remaining attributes based on the revised final NHESP code.

Description: The complete Storm Tide Pathways report should be reviewed to fully understand how these data were derived. Each flood stage was delivered to the Martha's Vineyard Commission (MVC) from the STP project's consultant, the Center for Coastal Studies in shapefile format. The MVC converted these to file geodatabase feature classes. Data were kept in their original projected coordinate system of NAD 1983(2011) UTM Zone 19N horizontal units are meters. Each inundation plane shows the full extent of flooding up to the plane's specified upper Total Water Level (attribute "RangeU_LLW"). A separate feature class is provided for each inundation plane in half foot increments of Total Water Level rise from 2.5ft to 19.5ft. This wide range of inundation provides the user with flexibility of data display and lots of opportunity for visualizing many hypothetical scenarios of coast storm Total Water Level with or without future sea level rise.In the attribute table, the inundation plane upper limit is also provided relative to NAVD88 feet (see attribute "Range_Up"). Attribute "NAVD88_m" is the upper Total Water Level represented relative to NAVD88 in meters. Lastly, the attribute table also provides the Total Water Level upper limit referenced to MLLW in meters "MLLW_M".

Description: NOTE: Harvard Forest did not provide written metadata. Rather, this metadata was written by the Martha's Vineyard Commission based on a phone conversation with Harvard Forest staff in Dec. 2023.Utilizing Harvard Forest's "Ancient Woodlands" data of 2019, the Martha's Vineyard Commission ran the Identity geoprocessing tool with that dataset and the MVC's 12/22/2023 version of the Open Space Conservation data for Martha's Vineyard. This process retained all of the Ancient Woodlands data and superimposed the attributes of [Level of Protection] and [OS_ID] into the Ancient Woodlands polygons. This permits one to readily analyze the data to see where Ancient Forests are currently protected in perpetuity, etc. Please see the Description section for background about Harvard Forest's delineation of the Ancient Woodlands.A domain table is provided which explains the Level of Protection codes. The [OS_ID] is a numeric ID which links back to the MVC's Open Space Conservation dataset. OS_ID is a unique identifier within that dataset. The numbers before the hyphen is the Town ID. 62 = Chilmark, 89 = Edgartown, 104 = Aquinnah, 221 = Oak Bluffs, 296 = Tisbury, 327 = West Tisbury. The Ancient Woodlands data were produced by Harvard Forest in Dec. 2019. Data for Martha's Vineyard were received from Harvard Forest in November of 2023. Looking at historic maps and older aerial photographs, Harvard Forest noted for 4 time periods when forest was present on the map or photo. Locations where forest was present for all 4 time periods, were regarded as 'Ancient Woodlands'. The 4 time periods reviewed were: circa 1850, circa 1890, 1938, 1993. Then the data were updated, based on Google's November 2018 photos, for recent development or new agricultural areas. Areas where development or agricultural fields existed were removed from the Ancient Woodlands dataset. The areas delineated in this dataset, represent Ancient Woodlands present as of year-end 2018. Please note: Ancient Woodlands are not the same as "Old Growth Forest".The specific citation for the 1850 and 1890 map are unknown. Harvard Forest georeferenced those maps in ArcGIS software. The 1938 black and white aerial photographs were georeferenced by a consultant hired by Harvard Forest. As an aside FYI, the 1993 photographs (color infrared? black & white?) is the same year of photography which was used for The Nature Conservancy's vegetation delineation of Martha's Vineyard. Not sure if Harvard Forest used the exact same photos as the TNC project but the time period is the same.Harvard Forest is in the process of analyzing the potential ecological benefit of these Ancient Woodlands. Preliminary results show these area have more huckleberry than non-Ancient Woodland areas. The Martha's Vineyard Commission did convert the Harvard Forest Ancient Woodlands data from multi-part polygons to single-part polygons prior to running the Identity analysis.

Description: In the absence of an Approved Wellhead Protection Area (Zone II), the MA DEP has adopted the Interim Wellhead Protection Area (IWPA) as the primary, protected recharge area for public water supply (PWS) groundwater sources in Massachusetts. For PWS sources that pump less than 100,000 gallons per day (GPD), the IWPA radius is proportional to the pumping rate in gallons per minute (GPM). Pumping rate is based on of several methods including, DWP approved pumping rate, metered data, Title 5 flow rate. The formula used for calculating the PWS well point buffer radius in feet is: Radius = ( 32 x pumping rate in GPM ) + 400 The minimum IWPA radius is 400 feet, the maximum (default) radius reached at 100,000 GPD (70 GPM) is 2,640 feet (1/2 mile). In instances where pumping rate information is unavailable default radius values are assigned based on the PWS well classification. The default radius for community class PWS groundwater sources (GW) is 2,640 feet (804.6 meters). The default radius for non-community sources is 750 feet (228.6 meters) for Non Transient (NTNC) wells and 500 feet (152.4 meters) for Transient (TNC) wells. The IWPA layer contains variable width IWPAs for BOTH community and non community groundwater sources in the DEP PWS datalayer which do not have an approved Zone II. IWPA features are generated by buffering PWS well point locations in the DEP Public Water Supply datalayer (PWSDEP_PT) based on radius values determined from the best available pumping rate information. The IWPA features are relatable to the PWS source points by SOURCE_ID.

Description: This dataset is a digital soil survey and generally is the most detailed level of soil geographic data developed by the National Cooperative Soil Survey. The information was prepared by digitizing maps, by compiling information onto a planimetric correct base and digitizing, or by revising digitized maps using remotely sensed and other information. This dataset consists of georeferenced digital map data and computerized attribute data. The map data are in a state-wide extent format and include a detailed, field verified inventory of soils and miscellaneous areas that normally occur in a repeatable pattern on the landscape and that can be cartographically shown at the scale mapped. The soil map units are linked to attributes in the National Soil Information System relational database, which gives the proportionate extent of the component soils and their properties.

Description: Using the open space conservation land dataset for Dukes County (version 3/26/2025) a 1000ft buffer was placed around those lands which are protected in Perpetuity or have Limited* protection. The dataset was clipped to the extent of Martha's Vineyard.*Limited protection applies to Chapter 97 lands which can be removed from conservation if the Town takes legal steps with the State to do so. Low likelihood for this to occur. The full conservation land dataset can be viewed here. Additional details about the conservation land dataset.

Extraction of Fragmented Woodlands - Martha's Vineyard Commission 2025
Description: First, read the details of how MassGIS created their slope dataset. MassGIS 2021 LiDARBeginning with the MassGIS Slope raster (values in degrees) -- the MVC reclassified the data so values of greater than 90 were set to 0; all other original values retained. Next, Focal Statistics was calculated to generalize the data: Parameters - Neighborhood 9x9 cell (each cell was 0.5sq m) Mean calculated & did NOT ignore 'No Data' values. Then from the generalized slope raster, Extracted Attribute where slope was >= 11 degrees. Reclassified that raster output so all values set to = 1. Converted reclassed raster to polygon - specified 'simplify polygon' and did NOT create multi part polygons. Two attribute fields were added to the polygon feature class: Description and Region. Description value set to either 'Steep' where polygon size is >=0.125acrea (506sq m) or 'Noise' if otherwise. Region indicates Martha's Vineyard or Nomans Land or town of Gosnold.
