The web-based ASTARTE database on Paleotsunami deposits for the North East Atlantic, Mediterranean and Connected seas (NEAM) region was funded by the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013) under grant agreement n_ 603839 (Project ASTARTE - Assessment, Strategy and Risk Reduction for Tsunamis in Europe).
It has been implemented with the purpose to be the future information repository for paleotsunami research in Europe, integrating the existing official scientific reports and peer reviewed papers. The database will be updated every 24 months.
Tsunami deposits can provide information about the minimum inundation distance and the minimum topographic height reached by the sea wave (run-up) at each site, as well as tsunami inundation recurrence based on the age of the events recognized at the site.
The three-level hierarchical database schema is quite complex and requires nine tables. The main table, Site, is related to the Event table (tsunami inundations) with a 1:M relationship and, with the same type of cardinality, to other four tables containing descriptive information (Geomorphic setting, Type of Site, Reference and Compiler). The Event table is related with a 1:M relationship to three other tables (Type of evidence, Type of analysis and Dating).
