The roads were originally segmented at the intersections of every local street. In the regional network extraction, these segments were consolidated and then re-segmented only at the intersections of other regional network roads. Attention was paid to whether drivers could actually pass between roads at each intersection: if they could not (for example, if there was a limited access roads with no interchange), no segmentation was done to each line at that intersection. Also, US 1 in the Florida Keys was represented by a very long segment that was further segmented at the locations of major towns (Islamorada, Marathon, and Big Pine Key).
