Description: In 2018 Microsoft released approximately 125 million building footprint polygon geometries in all 50 US States in GeoJSON format. A second release included updates using 2019-2020 photos for approximately one-third of the state of Illinois. The building footprints were generated by training computer vision algorithms to recognize building geometries on aerial imagery of the USA. More information can be found on github. ISWS is making these available in shapefile format for all Illinois counties. In the US, there are about 73,250,745 building footprints from 2019-2020. This was the focal area where Microsoft reran extraction for the latest release. The rest of the footprints were extracted from older images, having wider range of capture dates, averaging 2012 year approximately. Microsoft reused footprints from previous releases in these areas.
