Description:

State of Florida's TMDLs that are in state rule, approved by EPA, or are in a phase of development.

A TMDL (Total Maximum Daily Load) is a scientific determination of the maximum amount of a given pollutant that a surface water can absorb and still meet the water quality standards that protect its designated uses including recreation, human health, and aquatic life. Waterbodies that do not meet applicable water quality standards are identified as 'impaired' and placed on the Verified List of Impaired Waters for either the particular pollutant(s) of concern (for example, nutrients, fecal indicator bacteria, metals, etc.) or a response variable (for example, chlorophyll a) and TMDLs must be developed, adopted and implemented for those pollutants to reduce pollutants and restore the waterbody so that designated uses are attained. The water quality criteria for pollutants in surface waters — Florida's surface water quality standards on which TMDLs are based — are set forth primarily in Chapters 62-302 and 62-303, Florida Administrative Code (F.A.C.), and the associated table of water quality criteria. State adopted TMDL rules are included in Chapter 62-304, F.A.C.

This data layer depicts State adopted and EPA approved TMDLs, State adopted TMDLs, and draft TMDLs, and waterbodies identified on the Priority List for TMDL development.

State adopted and EPA approved TMDLs have been fully approved by both EPA Region 4 and the State of Florida. State adopted TMDLS are those TMDLs that have been adopted into State rule (Chapter 62-304, F.A.C.), but have not been approved by EPA. Draft TMDLs are those TMDLs that are currently undergoing public review, including a public workshop, and have not yet been adopted into State rule. Waterbodies on the Priority List for TMDL Development are TMDLs that are currently in the process of being development by department staff.

TMDLs are listed by parameter and those shown in this layer include: 1) Dissolved Oxygen (DO) and Nutrient TMDLs, which are TMDLs for the following impaired parameters: Dissolved Oxygen, Biochemical Oxygen Demand, Nutrients, and Un-ionized Ammonia; 2) Bacteria TMDLs for waterbodies that are impaired for Fecal Indicator Bacteria (fecal coliform, Escherichia coli, or Enterococci); and, 3) Other TMDLs, such as Iron, Lead, and Turbidity.

This layer is updated periodically as TMDL progress through an administrative and public review process.
