Service Description: This layer is current as of 2021. The layer was created and maintained by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (Department), Division of Water Resource Management, Support Program and Mining and Mitigation Program (MMP) Staff.
For partially released mines, maintain the full mine boundary in the ‘Mandatory Nonphosphate Current Mines [YEAR]’ layer and include only the released areas in the ‘Mandatory Nonphosphate Released Mines [YEAR]’ layer. For completely released mines, move the project boundary to this layer and remove from the ‘Mandatory Non-Phosphate - Current Mines (2021)’ layer.

Description: This layer contains boundaries for nonphosphate mines (or portions thereof) in Florida (phosphate mines are maintained in a separate layer) that were regulated by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (Department), Mining and Mitigation Program (MMP), but have been released from regulation under Chapters 373 (ERP) and/or 378 (mine reclamation), F.S.
If the mine is fully released, the mine is permanently shut down. Partially released mines included in this layer may or may not be permanently shut down. This layer includes mines where reclamation was completed and release formally requested by the operator, as well as mines where no reclamation release was requested and the site may have been converted to a different land use, but MMP staff have determined that the obligation to reclaim no longer applies; factors considered in the determination include public health, safety, and welfare, protection of the state’s environment, and return of the site to a beneficial use [378.402(2), F.S.]. It may include areas that have been converted to industrial, residential, or recreational land uses; it may also include mines that have naturally reclaimed.
Copyright Text: FDEP Division of Water Resource Management, Support Program, Polygons were either digitized from maps submitted to the Department or in some cases where no maps were available, polygons are rough estimations of the extent of the disturbed areas (based on aerial interpretation) that were subject to the reclamation requirements of Part III of Chapter 378, F.S.; the polygon may also include areas that were not subject to reclamation requirements to simplify drawing. Although due care was taken when digitizing or drawing polygon boundaries, the boundaries are not based on survey data and should not be interpreted to have survey-level accuracy. Attribute data was populated based on information submitted to the Department in permit applications, conceptual reclamation plans, mining notices and/or other items by mine operators, owners, and/or consultants. Attribute data was checked by Department staff with experience reviewing applications for and inspecting each individual mine, however attribute information may contain errors or inaccuracies.
