Description: Represents districts and sites that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (Federal designation) and the Virginia Landmarks Register (State designation). Districts typically carry both designations. Both of these programs are administered by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources in conjunction with the National Park Service and the City of Richmond Division of Planning and Preservation. Properties that fall within these districts may be entitled to various development incentives, such as State and Federal Rehabilitation Tax Credits. National Register and Virginia Landmark Register Historic districts frequently experience boundary changes and new districts are created annually, due to the fact that the Rehabilitation Tax Credit programs are tied to State and/or Federal historic designation. The creation or amendment/expansion of National Register and Virginia Landmark Register Historic districts is often tied to economic development efforts.Note that some districts overlap and there are similarities with the boundaries for City Old and Historic Districts.
