Description: The HVI shapefile contains the individual factors and the combined Heat Vulnerability Index that was created by Colleen Reid and collaborators as part of the project that is documented in the article "Mapping Community Determinants of Heat Vulnerability", published in Environmental Health Perspectives in 2009. The heat vulnerability index is a composite index of four factors that were created from a factor analysis of ten variables that denote increased vulnerability of populations to extreme heat. The HVI was created at the census tract geographic scale for 39,794 census tracts in the contiguous 48 US States. The data used for the calculation of the HVI was from the years 2000-2002.
Tract_FIPS is the Federal Information ProcessingStandards code for the Census Tract
Factor1 is the scaled score for the first factor of the HVI which generally designates socio-economic and environmental vulnerability.
Factor2 is the scaled score for the second factor of the HVI which generally designates social isolation.
Factor3 is the scaled score for the third factor of the HVI which generally designates air conditioning prevalence.
Factor4 is the scaled score for the fourth factor of the HVI which generally designates pre-existing health conditions.
HVI contains the full heat vulnerability index score for each census tract which is the sum of the four factors.
For more detailed information on the methods used to calculate the HVI, please refer to the paper, cited below, that is avialable free from Environmental Health Perspectives and can be downloaded here: http://ehp03.niehs.nih.gov/article/fetchArticle.action?articleURI=info%3Adoi%2F10.1289%2Fehp.0900683
