Fairfax County can be grouped into physiographic provinces based on similar landforms, type of the underlying bedrock, structure of the rocks, geologic age of the rocks, etc. with its immediate surroundings. Fairfax County is part of the Atlantic Coastal Plain and the Piedmont Province, both of which extend not only into surrounding Counties but even beyond the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Piedmont Province is subdivided into the Piedmont Upland and Triassic Basins, resulting in Fairfax County being grouped into three physiographic provinces.
