The Census Tract Population Near Bus Stops and Rail Stations layer was created for the Strategic Plan Housing and Neighborhood Livability Dashboard to estimate bus and rail access throughout the county.
Data for bus stops and rail stations were retrieved on December 9, 2024. All were taken from static GTFS feeds except for Amtrak rail stations, which were retrieved from the US Department of Transportation's (USDOT) open geodatabase.
Bus access is defined as living within 0.25 mi. of a bus stop managed by the following agencies that serve Fairfax County: Alexandria DASH, Fairfax Connector, Fairfax City CUE, Loudoun County Transit, OmniRide, and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA).
Rail access is separated into three metrics: living within 0.5 mi. of a WMATA heavy rail station, 1 mi. from a Virginia Railway Express (VRE) commuter rail station, and 1 mi. from an Amtrak intercity passenger rail station.
The above distances to a bus stop or rail station are based on USDOT's accessibility standards for public transportation. Amtrak is not part of public transportation, but 1 mi. was used to estimate accessibility.
