Treemap__2016_Total_Tree_Carbon (FeatureServer)

View In:   Map Viewer

Service Description: 2016 average tree carbon (standing live and dead trees) and downed woody material >3” in diameter in tons per acre summarized by western NFS firesheds, shown as quartiles. We are drawing from data published in TreeMap 2016: A tree-level model of the forests of the conterminous United States circa 2016 (Riley et al., 2021; Riley et al., 2022). This data was chosen since total carbon was able to be aggregated at a fireshed scale. Data provided is a 30X30 m spatial resolution tree-level model of forests shown as a raster map for the conterminous U.S. circa 2016. A random forests machine-learning algorithm was used to impute forest plot data from Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) to a set of target rasters that were provided by Landscape Fire and Resource Management Planning Tools (LANDFIRE: https://landfire.gov). Total tree carbon (CARBON_Total field) in tons per acre was calculated by adding attribute fields CARBON_L (Carbon, live above ground), CARBON_D (Carbon, standing dead), and CARBON_DWN (Carbon, dead down >3” diameter and stumps and roots >3” diameter). These were all provided as tons per acre. CARBON_D contained values of -99 for some plots which indicates null values equivalent to no standing dead trees; these were converted to zero values. A Lookup geoprocessing tool was run to isolate the Carbon_Total field from the rest of the attributes for further processing. Zonal Statistics by Table were run to gather basic statistics on Carbon_Total using FireshedNFSWest layer as the feature zone and FIRESHED_ID field as the Zone Field. Ignore No Data in calculations was selected for this process. This allowed for the statistics to be calculated for the Total_Carbon pixel values that fall within each NFS west fireshed. The resulting table was then joined to the original FireshedsNFSWest layer and displayed as an average of CARBON_Total (tons per acre) symbolized in 4 categories with an emphasis on those firesheds that have average tree carbon in tons per acre in the upper quartile.
