Service Description: Map Service showing information about land management plans, including planning unit boundaries and their associated land allocations. A land management plan provides a framework for integrated resource management and for guiding project and activity decision-making on a national forest, grassland, prairie, or other administrative unit. New plan development is required for new NFS units; an existing plan may be amended at any time. Land allocations include Management Areas, Geographic Areas, and Recommended Designated Areas. Management Areas are land areas identified within the planning area that have the same set of applicable plan components and typically represent the management emphasis on the landscape. Geographic areas are spatially contiguous land areas identified within the planning area and focus on a place rather than a management emphasis. Recommended designated areas are identified in the plan as recommendations to establish or modify existing designated areas.

Description: It is required for every National Forest to have a Land Management Plan (LMP), often referred to as a forest plan. Land management plans contain different geospatial land allocations that have specific plan components to drive management intent. The LandManagementPlanningUnit layer shows the land management planning units, their boundaries, FS Region, planning phase milestone and associated date, and link to a related planning website. The ManagementArea, Geographic Area, and Recommended Designated Area layers show the geospatial extent of each land allocation within the land management plan, with pertinent metadata and includes data from both the 1982 and 2012 planning rules.
