Description: Shortleaf pine has the broadest distribution of the southern pines and is found in all 13 states in the Southern Region. These forests are important sources of high quality forest products and provide habitat for a wide range of wildlife species, including the federally endangered red cockaded woodpecker. These forests are disappearing at an alarming rate. In the last 30 years there has been a 50% loss of shortleaf across its entire range. Approximately 60% of shortleaf pine-dominated forests are found on non-industrial private land. In response, state and federal agencies and non-industrial private landowners and other stakeholders have come together to begin the recovery of shortleaf habitat. Since 2010, the Landscape Scale Restoration (LSR) program has leveraged over $2.3 million (1:1 match) to restore shortleaf pine across its native range. Project funds have established seed orchards and demonstration sites, developed burning regimes, and developed a range-wide restoration plan.
