Description: Data depicting proposed trail work in Sawmill Canyon on the Lost River Ranger District of the Salmon-Challis National Forest. The Sawmill Canyon area represents an area that has opportunity for integrated recreation management.
Major proposed actions:
- Reroute trails away from streams and
- Install three trail bridges on the North Fork of Big Creek to reduce sedimentation. Doing this will also improve trail sustainability thereby reducing maintenance needs.
- Reroute trails or place obstacles and barriers at the beginning of the trailheads to discourage illegal motorized use. Total trail miles that may be rerouted: approximately 30 miles (10 motorized/20 non-motorized).
- Convert 4 miles of non-motorized trail to seasonal single-track motorcycle use to create a loop opportunity and spread out use.
- Convert 2 miles of 50-inch width restricted motorized trail to 64-inch width restricted motorized trail to accomodate larger utility terrain vehicles.
- Brush out 2 miles of National Forest System Trail NFST 4177.02.
- Redesign Timber Creek Campground to accommodate modern camping preferences such as RVs, and tow-behind campers.
- Closing, decommissioning, making unusable, and rehabilitating approx. 5 miles of user created routes.
- Install signs to direct users on allowable and appropriate trail use.
