Description: The Lewis and Clark National Forest, in its October 2007 Record of Decision on the Little Belt, Castle and (North Half) Crazy Mountains Travel Management Plan, identified some system and nonsystem roads and trails as being "unnecessary for public use and/or [.] contributing to undesirable resource degredation." In addition to these routes, there exist many "temporary" roads which were never properly decommissioned/obliterated at the end of their useful life and are included in this data layer. It is the intention of the Forest to use this layer to track road obliteration projects to restore watershed function and health within the Little Belt, Castle and (North Half) Crazy Mountains Travel Management Plan area. Beginning in the fall of 2007, the Forest Rehab Team began a system of surveying, tracking, and obliterating routes. By eliminating routes which are unneeded, eroding, or restricting water flow, multiple objectives and targets are being accomplished. Restored watershed function and decreased sedimentation are the primary goals. Secondarily, by eliminating routes, wildlife security is improved and habitat protected along with illegal motorized travel being reduced. This data layer provides an electronic means of tracking routes and their status on the ground. All routes are identified by a route number (RTE_NO) and most by name (RTE_NAME) which help in identifying the roads on a map. In order to have a consistent means of linking to other layers and tables or corporate databases, system routes and most nonsystem routes have a unique numerical value, or control number (RTE_CN). For condition tracking, each road is identified with a status (RTE_STATUS) such as existing, naturally recovered, or obliterated with a date (STATUS_VERIFIED_DATE) correspoding to when that status was confirmed.
Description: Dataset contains proposed Haul Routes for vegetation projects for alternative 2 within the proposed Castle Mountain Restoration Project. The foundation of this dataset is a feature class of the spatial representation of the Infra II_ROAD_CORE_ATM table for the Helena and Lewis & Clark National Forests. It was created using the Geospatial Interface visualization "Roads join to II_ROAD_CORE_ATM-RSW for both Forests, then the two resulting feature classes were merged into one. The version used was created 20140827.The dataset was then refined and 'temporary haul routes' were added. The exact location of these routes are speculated based on the best available information, as well as site visits. However, during implimentation, if that route is selected as the proposed action, the exact spatial location represented in this file may change.
