This dataset provides descriptive and location information for the Sierra National Forest Land Management Plan 2023 Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail Management Area. Management Areas, sometimes called Land Allocations or Prescriptions, are required as part of a Land Management Plan (LMP), often referred to as Forest Plan. These plans detail how certain areas or land types will be managed.
The Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail Management Area width is based on GIS analysis of terrain, distance, and visibility and is intended for illustrative purposes. To apply plan direction to specific projects and decisions, management area width on the Sierra NF will be determined by applying the narrative description of the management area to site-specific analysis: The area that is visible from the trail’s centerline at a height of 5 feet above the ground, extending up to one-half mile of the centerline on each side of the trail, where visibility is not obscured by terrain. In general, not accounting for turns in trail, the maximum distance between two boundaries of the management area is 1 mile, along a line perpendicular to the trail.
