Geometry Type: esriGeometryPoint

Description:

Each plot was assigned to a single land use class during T2 based on plurality of plot condition proportions, with the following precedence employed in cases of ties (highest to lowest precedence, respectively): Forest, Developed, Wetland, Water, Pasture/Rangeland, Cropland, Other. Michigan, Minnesota, and New Jersey had 5-year remeasurement cycles during T2, with inventory years of 2015-2019. All 21 other NRS-FIA states were on 7-year remeasurement cycles, with inventory years of 2013-2019. T2 land use classes are identical to T1 (above).

Cropland

“Agricultural land -Land managed for crops, pasture (improved through cultural practices) [but note that pasture is omitted for this dataset], or other agricultural use. The area must be at least 1.0 acre in size and 120.0 feet wide (with the exception of windbreak/shelterbelt, which has no minimum width).” Includes specific classes of cropland, idle farmland, orchard, Christmas tree plantation, maintained wildlife opening, and windbreak/shelterbelt. Note that standard FIA definitions include pasture within agricultural land. For this dataset, pasture is removed from agricultural land and aggregated with rangeland into a separate class; see below. For this dataset, the aggregation of agricultural lands (excluding pasture) is labeled “Cropland”, which aligns with IPCC labels.

Developed

“Land used primarily by humans for purposes other than forestry or agriculture [also excluding open water, wetlands, and other rare classes].” Includes specific land use classes of cultural, rights-of-way, recreation, and mining.

Forest

“Accessible forest land - Land within the population of interest that can be occupied safely and has at least 10 percent canopy cover by live tally trees of any size or has had at least 10 percent canopy cover of live tally species in the past, based on the presence of stumps, snags, or other evidence. To qualify, the area must be at least 1.0 acre in size and 120.0 feet wide. Forest land includes transition zones, such as areas between forest and nonforest lands that meet the minimal tree canopy cover and forest areas adjacent to urban and built-up lands. Roadside, streamside, and shelterbelt strips of trees must have a width of at least 120 feet and continuous length of at least 363 feet to qualify as forest land. Unimproved roads and trails, streams, and clearings in forest areas are classified as forest if they are less than 120 feet wide or less than an acre in size. Tree-covered areas in agricultural production settings, such as fruit orchards, or tree-covered areas in urban settings, such as city parks, are not considered forest land.”

Other

“Land parcels greater than 1.0 acre in size and greater than 120.0 feet wide, which do not fall into one of the uses described above. Examples include undeveloped beaches, barren land (rock, sand), marshes, bogs, ice, and snow.” Includes specific land use classes of nonvegetated, beach, wetland [but removed for this dataset] and nonforest-chaparral. Note that standard FIA definitions of “Other” class includes “Wetland” class. But for this dataset, Wetland class is excluded from “Other” and is presented as a separate class, below.

Pasture/Rangeland

In this dataset, pasture is aggregated with rangeland into a single class because the two are easily confused. Rangeland is defined as “Land primarily composed of grasses, forbs, or shrubs. This includes lands vegetated naturally or artificially to provide a plant cover managed like native vegetation and does not meet the definition of pasture. The area must be at least 1.0 acre in size and 120.0 feet wide.” In NRS-FIA, much of the apparent change between rangeland and pasture (or vice versa) is likely due to change in photo-interpretation, not actual change on the ground. FIA prefield crews interpreting aerial imagery look for patches of at least 40 acres before considering rangeland classes. In general, NRS-FIA classifies very little area as rangeland east of Missouri River.

Water

An aggregation of noncensus and census water. “Noncensus water - Lakes, reservoirs, ponds, and similar bodies of water 1.0 acre to 4.5 acre in size. Rivers, streams, canals, etc., 30.0 feet to 200 feet wide. This definition was used in the 1990 census and applied when the data became available. Earlier inventories defined noncensus water differently.” “Census water - Lakes, reservoirs, ponds, and similar bodies of water 4.5 acre in size and larger; and rivers, streams, canals, etc., more than 200 feet wide.“

Wetland

Not specifically defined. Note that standard FIA definitions include wetland class within “Other” class (above). But for this dataset, Wetland class is excluded from “Other” and is presented as a separate class.
