Description: Potential Wilderness Process Overview During the plan revision process, the Forest Service must identify lands that may be suitable for inclusion in the National Wilderness Preservation System (NWPS) and determine whether to recommend any areas for wilderness designation. Only Congress can designate areas as wilderness, but plan revision plays an important role in which lands are considered. The plan revision wilderness process is detailed in the Forest Service Land Management Planning Handbook 1909.12, Chapter 70. It’s important to remember that each of the 4 steps includes opportunities for you to provide feedback. 1. Inventory 2. Evaluation 3. Analysis 4. Recommendation The inventory is the first step and is meant to be inclusive, with the intent of breaking the forest into areas that can then be evaluated for their wilderness character and manageability. Based on the evaluation and input from the public, some areas may be analyzed in one or more Plan Revision alternatives. Based on NEPA analysis, and public input, the Forest Supervisor may recommend that certain areas be considered for wilderness designation by Congress. The best process will be a result of input from all people who care about the GMUG, people like you! So please stay tuned and provide feedback as we move through the wilderness process. See the GMUG Forest Plan Revision website for more information about the broader Forest Plan Revision process.
