Description: NMCOG's trail network data was developed between 2019 and 2025 with thanks four separate grants from the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) Recreational Trails Program under MassTrails. NMCOG's source dataset includes conceptual, planned, and unconfirmed trails that are not shared publicly except on request. Note that this data includes trails which may be restricted to the public, including trails on private property (see also the Trail_Status and Public_Access fields). The Regional Trail Network data is not sufficient for legal or regulatory interpretation. Note that trails on Division of Fisheries and Wildlife lands (primarily in Dunstable, Pepperell, and Tyngsborough) are not for public distribution. NMCOG is grateful for the many time and data contributions from the Greater Lowell communities of Billerica, Chelmsford, Dracut, Dunstable, Lowell, Pepperell, Tewksbury, Tyngsborough, and Westford. Data development notes: 5/22/2025: NMCOG's trail data was migrated to the statewide trails database standard (version 1), with additional field used by NMCOG. 6/20/2024: NMCOG staff made updates to this NMCOG Regional Trail Network data in May and June 2024 as a subcontractor to the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) which received a grant from the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation’s MassTrails Grant Program. The goal of the grant was to standardize, update, and expand the Massachusetts Regional Trail Map. NMCOG completed tasks from the “Massachusetts Statewide Trails Database Scope of Work” dated December 2023: trails were added or corrected based on available new data sources and and open spaces without trail data were reviewed for available trail information. 12/31/2022: With Massachusetts DCR MassTrails funding, Northern Middlesex Council of Governments compiled trail information from multiple sources into a data model developed based on a review of trail attributes from multiple organizations. Most fields from the 2021 MassDOT Bicycle and Pedestrian LRS event layers are included. Fields were also added to the model from Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation trails, MAPC Trailmap, and other Regional Planning Agency and conservation organization trail data. Regional trail data from multiple sources was acquired or mapped by NMCOG and loaded into the regional trail network data model. Mass DCR: trails data for the region’s DCR properties was loaded from MassGIS"s data last updated in 2015. Where DCR data conflicted with local trail information, the newer data source was loaded into the regional network.
