The data displayed represent river water status. As part of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) Monitoring Programme approximately one third of major rivers in Ireland and important tributaries are surveyed and assessed each year.
The Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) provides a framework to protect all high status waters, prevent further deterioration of all waters and to restore degraded surface and ground waters to at least good status.
