The fire ignition points for all fires that burned entirely or partly within Yosemite National Park for the period 2002 through 2011. Fire history taken from historic records kept at Yosemite National Park. Ignition points were determined from lightning strike data or from prescription ignition points for prescribed fires.
This is a vector line dataset representing the Road features in Yosemite National Park. This dataset is utilizing the updated NPS Road Spatial Data Standard dated 10/21/2016 with additional Yosemite-specific fields (YOSE_xxxxx) that are necessary for dispatch CAD purposes and other internal purposes. See NPS documentation for field and domain definitions. YOSE-specific fields will not be incorporated into national or regional NPS compilations of data, but maintained at Yosemite.
Approximate bounding polygons of Yosemite's three Sequoia groves. Areas include all mapped large individuals (adults).
The "Non_RXFire_Legacy" data layer contains vegetation treatment project perimeters from multiple agencies with associated tabular data for responsible agency, contract number, project name, start date, and acres reported. Data provided are merged from sources of varying quality. This dataset is a sub-set of the 'rxburn' dataset compiled by CAL FIRE.
This dataset is considered to be a legacy dataset of vegetation management projects and should not be assumed to be a full accounting of all such projects from contributing agencies. A great deal of user discretion is advised in the use of this dataaset.
V13_2 Thirty-seven treatments (preparation, hand pile and machine pile) were moved out of the rxfire19_1 feature class and into this feature class.
Version Information:
The data is updated yearly with fire perimeters from the previous fire season.
Firep21_2 was released in October 2022. The fields COMPLEX_NAME and COMPLEX_INCNUM were added to the dataset; historical complex fires were updated as such to the best of current ability. COMPLEX_NAME is for fires that were initially individual fires (with their own name) and then became part of a complex and thus were given a new name. COMPLEX_INCNUM was created for the same reason as COMPLEX_NAME. Ten fires were added (5 CAL FIRE, 5 USDA Forest Service). The 2008 Paradise Fire perimeter was spatially adjusted to more accurately account for its location. Six perimeters were removed, becoming a complex. The 1996 Columbia Hill and Shields Camp perimeters were removed due to confirmation of their status of prescribed burn. The 2014 Coffee fire was replaced by a more accurate polygon. Thirty-two records' attributes were updated, mostly CAUSE data from 2019 and 2020.
The following fires were identified as meeting our collection criteria for 2021 fires but are not included in this version and will hopefully be added in the next update: Hartman, Lone Rock, Union, and Nelson.
If you would like a full briefing on these adjustments, please contact CAL FIRE FRAP.

CAL FIRE (including contract counties), USDA Forest Service Region 5, USDI Bureau of Land Management & National Park Service, and other agencies jointly maintain a comprehensive fire perimeter GIS layer for public and private lands throughout the state. The data covers fires back to 1878.
Current criteria for data collection are as follows:
CAL FIRE (including contract counties) submit perimeters ≥10 acres in timber, ≥50 acres in brush, or ≥300 acres in grass, and/or ≥3 damaged/ destroyed residential or commercial structures, and/or caused ≥1 fatality.
All cooperating agencies submit perimeters ≥10 acres.

Discrepancies between wildfire perimeter data and Redbook Large Damaging Fires
Large Damaging fires in California were first defined by the 1979 Redbook. The definition of “Large Damaging” fires used by CAL FIRE has changed over time and differs from the definition initially used when compiling this digital Fire Perimeter data.
In contrast, the definition of fires whose perimeter should be collected has changed once in the approximately 30 years the data has been in existence. Below are descriptions of changes in data collection criteria used when compiling these two datasets.
To facilitate comparison, this meta data includes a summary, by year of fires in the Redbook that do not appear in this fire perimeter dataset. It is followed by an enumeration of each “Redbook” fire missing from the spatial data.
Wildfire Perimeter criteria
~1991: 10 acres timber, 30 acres brush, 300 acres grass, damages or destroys three residence or one commercial structure or $300,000 damage
~2010: 1991 criteria but the monetary criteria, the differentiation of structure type and the use of damages were all removed
Redbook Fire data criteria
1979 - Fires of a minimum of 300 acres that burn at least: 30 acres timber, 300 acres brush, 1500 acres woodland or grass
1981 - 1979 criteria plus fires that took 3000 hrs of CDF personnel time to suppress
1992 - 1981 criteria plus 1500 acres ag products, or destroys three residence or one commercial structure or $300,000 damage
1993 - 1992 criteria but “three or more structures destroyed” replaces “destroys three residence or one commercial structure” and the 3000 hrs of CDF personnel time to suppress is removed
2008 - simply 300 acres and larger

The "rxburn" data layer contains perimeters from multiple agencies, representing prescribed fires, fire use, machine pile burns, hand pile burns and jackpot burns, with associated tabular data for responsible agency, project number, project name, start date, acres reported and more. Data provided are merged from sources of varying quality. There has been a significant amount of work to resolve duplicate prescribed fires (from different sources). This layer is a best attempt, does not include complete data for all agencies. Two of the attributes in this dataset, PRE_CON_CLASS and POST_CON_CLASS are based on an abstract concept called "Condition Class." There is more information about "Condition Class" in the Overview Description / Entity and Attribute Overview section. Those two attributes are not collected consistently.
Version 21_2 was released in October 2022 and includes 710 fire related fuel treatments from 2019-2020 FACTS data (USFS).
All fire footprints within and nearby Yosemite from 1930 through 2011. Fire history taken from historic records kept at Yosemite National Park. Fires in more recent years were recorded from fire perimeters drawn on paper maps and/or recorded by GPS Unit. Original data was interpreted from historical fire records held at Yosemite National Park in the late 1980s. Polygons depicting burned areas were drawn on 1:62,500 USGS maps (15" series) based on written descriptions in the fire records. Fires less than 10 acres in size were depicted as points. Mylar film was placed over paper maps and registered with tic marks at map corners. Fires were traced on Mylar and sent to a contractor for digitizing into SAGIS vector format. Fires depicted as points were given the area noted in the fire records by buffering the points. SAGIS data was converted to GRASS format when Yosemite migrated to GRASS. GRASS data was converted to Arc/Info coverage format when Yosemite migrated to Arc/Info in 1995. Some vector data was lost in conversion from GRASS. In those instances, polygons were vectorized from raster versions that remained in GRASS. Each year from 1995 - 2000, fires were input into Arc/Info by digitizing 1:24,000 USGS paper maps (7.5" series) or from Trimble GPS readings. Starting 2001, all larger fire perimeters were acquired through ground GPS or helicopter GPS reconnaissance. Small fire point locations were acquired through ground GPS or helicopter GPS and buffered to approximate fire size.
