Service Description: Existing bus routes and population demographics in Chattanooga, Tennessee were assessed to determine areas most in need of a new bus route. Network Analysis was used with a network dataset and existing bus stops were imported. A 10-minute walk toward the bus stops was mapped to create service area polygons around each stop. Block groups were added then enriched with three variables pertaining to demographics of Chattanooga: total population, population below poverty level, and population without a vehicle. A separate layer was created for each enriched layer then symbolized using “vary symbology by attribute” and transparency to add a visual variable to the layer and display the distribution of all variables on the map. This analysis and display of outputs show that the East Ridge and Red Bank neighborhoods are most in need of a new bus route. These areas show the highest concentrations and the most overlap of the three demographic variables and do not currently have a nearby bus route.
