Description: Intake Protection Zones (IPZs) are the priority vulnerable areas delineated for the Source Water Protection Assessment Report (Chapters 5 through 11 - NPCA, 2010). IPZs are identified for protection of municipal water treatment plant supply under the Clean Water Act (CWA). There are usually both primary intake protection zones (IPZ-1s) and secondary intake protection zone (IPZ-2s) for each water treatment plant intake. Some intakes have a third intake protection zone (IPZ-3s), which is an area where modelling has demonstrated that contaminants released during an event may be transported to the intake and cause an adverse effect. There are six (6) water treatment plants in NPCA; Grimsby, Rosehill (Fort Erie), DeCew Falls, Welland, Port Colborne and Niagara Falls. This data forms part of the local Niagara Assessment Report Database (ARDB).
