Where roads cross watercourses, bridges and culverts can create barriers to fish and wildlife movement. This impacts natural heritage system connectivity and can also cause road mortality. CVC’s Road and Valley Crossings project evaluated existing bridge and culvert infrastructure. We identified priority structures for mitigation or replacement to improve fish and wildlife habitat connectivity in the Credit River Watershed. Improving connections in these areas can also reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions. This in turn improves health and safety for both people and wildlife.
CVC undertook the Road and Valley Crossings Project in two phases. Phase 1 involved characterizing existing conditions for fish and wildlife passage at bridges and culverts. For this phase we completed field inventories at bridges and culverts from 2014-2017, focusing on municipal roads. Phase 2 involved identifying priority bridges and culverts for upgrade to improve fish and wildlife passage.
