Service Description: This web app serves to identify the species with Critical Habitats falling within North Carolina's Riparian Buffer Zones.
Critical Habitats are areas identified by the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) as vital for the conservation of species listed as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). These areas contain biological or physical features known to facilitate population growth, such as breeding grounds, nutritional resources, and shelter sites that offer protection from disturbances (e.g., adverse weather events). Careful evaluation of the urban and natural landscapes surrounding Critical Habitats is necessary to implement effective countermeasures against ecological concerns with the potential to hinder conservation efforts, such as contamination and invasive species. When there are additional conservation efforts occurring within an area, it may improve the likelihood that Critical Habitats will be appropriately managed. Riparian buffer zones represent a type of land use that may facilitate more synergistic approaches to aquatic habitat conservation. These buffer zones consist of vegetated regions adjacent to water bodies and wetlands, and help preserve the integrity of aquatic ecosystems.
