Description: The Disturbed Areas Project began in February 2012 and concluded in May 2013. It captured the primary human use type and percentage of disturbed area for all human use types in 84,631 square miles in Arizona. The unit of interpretation was a hexagon measuring one square mile in area. The use intensity level for each hexagon was interpreted as one of five percentage categories and the human use type as one of sixteen land use type categories. The latest available aerial imagery (current as of 2010) were used for this analysis, with a suite of reference datasets (e.g., land ownership, US Forest Service boundaries) used as reference. Data were initially collected for the Sonoran Desert Ecoregion during which time human use intensity and type categories and methods were refined, after which the scope was expanded to the entire state. Native American lands were not included as a part of this project.
