Description: Categorises the park boundaries into Horticultural Parks, Neighbourhood Parks, Sportsfield Reserves, Esplanade and Foreshore Reserves, Conservation Reserves, Landscape Reserves, Walkways, Street Gardens, Cemeteries and Community Facilities. Horticultural Parks preserve heritage plantings, botanical display and accessible for passive recreation and community events. Neighbourhood Parks provide accessible informal recreation close to home, primarily for play and social interaction and enhancing the amenity of residential areas. Sportsfield Reserves provide organised sports such as soccer, rugby, cricket, tennis, bowls, skate parks and athletics and providing larger areas for informal recreation. Esplanade and Foreshore Reserves protect waterways and the coast and providing ecological linkages and walking/cycling corridors between the city’s open spaces. Conservation Reserves provide water supply catchment protection, biodiversity and heritage conservation, and informal recreation such as mountain biking and walking. Landscape Reserves protect the city’s back-drop and landscape characteristics and providing high quality opportunities for informal recreation. Walkways provide corridors for movement around the city (primarily walking and cycling) and linking areas of open space. Current operationsal cemeteries include Marsden, Wakapuaka, Seaview and Hira. In additional there are several historic cemeteries that are managed and maintained as historic parks. These include Hallowell, Quakers Acre and St Andrews and the Cliffs. Street gardens and trees throughout the city to improve the visual amenity of Nelsons streetscape and to provide small areas for passive rest and relaxation for members of the public.
