The North Carolina Lead Safe Housing Database is a comprehensive statewide lead housing database that allows users to look up the actual year built and associated lead-based paint risk of residential properties in North Carolina using an online database search tool. Under the NC Lead Safe Housing Database’s “Lead Safe” standard, residential properties built after December 31, 1977, when the federal ban on lead-based paint in residential housing went into effect, are presumed to have been built without lead paint. The database considers these residential properties to be “Lead Safe.” However, the “Lead Safe” standard applies to residential lead-based paint hazards only. “Lead Safe” properties may still contain other known residential lead hazards, including those from water and soil. Nonresidential properties and residential properties built on or before December 31, 1977 may or may not have been built with lead-based paint and are classified as having an “Unknown” lead status in the database.
