Description: Physicians per 1,000 People by country, repeated for each of the following years: 1970, 1980, 1990, 2000, 2010 to enable time-series display using the YEAR attribute. Physicians include generalist and specialist medical practitioners. 
Data Sources: World Health Organization Global Health Expenditure database, World Health Organization's Global Health Workforce Statistics, OECD, supplemented by country data, retrieved from The World Bank DataBank. Country shapes from Natural Earth 50M scale data.
The WHO estimates that at least 2.5 physicians, nurses, and midwives per 1,000 people are needed to provide adequate coverage with primary care interventions associated with achieving the Millennium Development Goals (WHO, World Health Report 2006).
