Description: This data set contains observations of wildlife species that
are Endangered, Threatened, of Special Concern (ETSC), or tracked for some
other reason by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIFW). Repeated
observations of the same species in the same location are represented by a
single polygon attributed with the range of observation dates. The mapping
around each location includes important habitats associated with the species
that was observed there. The primary purpose of this data set is to flag areas
where a consultation with MDIFW about a species is warranted. This layer is
updated as new observations are made and, less frequently, to refine the
habitat mapping. In some cases, observations are removed from the data set when
they become too old to be relevant, are replaced by more accurate information,
or otherwise no longer represent a significant observation for that species.
The geographic distribution of observations for a species may or may not
approximate the extent of its occurrence in Maine. Although some observations
are from systematic, relatively comprehensive surveys, other surveys focused on
areas where the species was expected to be found and some observations were
simply opportunistic. Users should not assume that a lack of data in a
particular area means that the species does not occur there. Similarly, some
observations are incidental (e.g., dispersing juveniles) and may not indicate
that a viable population of that species occurs there. Users are encouraged to contact MDIFW with
any questions about a specific observation or species.
