Service Description: The Ticao-Burias Pass Protected Seascape (TBPPS) is one of the Philippines' most ecologically significant marine areas, boasting an unparalleled richness of coastal and marine habitats. This protected area, located in the Bicol Region, comprises the pristine waters between Ticao Island and Burias Island, serving as a vital corridor for marine biodiversity, migratory, and reproductive activity. Because of its vital significance in maintaining the region's biological balance and supporting coastal communities' livelihoods, the preservation and accurate understanding of its diverse ecosystems are critical. Additionally, these ecosystems contribute to carbon sequestration, shoreline protection, and overall climate resilience, making them vital assets in the face of climate change.
This app showcase the results of a coastal marine habitat mapping project conducted by the WWF-Philippines GIS Unit in collaboration with local government units (LGUs) in the Ticao-Burias Pass Protected Seascape (TBPPS). The study employed advanced remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) technologies, combined with field surveys and expert validation, to generate accurate and relatively high-resolution maps of the various coastal and marine habitats found within the TBPPS. Considering the three essential ecosystems found in the coastal marine environment: coral reefs, seagrass, and mangrove areas, the study highlights the importance of accurate habitat mapping for conservation and management purposes. It provides valuable insights into the distribution, extent, and ecological significance of coastal marine habitats in the area, which will contribute to better decision-making.
