Description: This polygon feature class contains National Priority List (NPL) site boundaries for California. NPL sites are hazardous waste sites that are eligible for extensive long-term cleanup under the Superfund program of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA). Eligibility is determined by a scoring method called Hazard Ranking System. Sites with high scores are listed on the NPL. Generally, each NPL polygon has a separate source. Polygons for non-Federal Facility sites were initially updated in January, 2007 for the Superfund Work Load Models project. Updates to Federal and non-Federal Facility site boundaries are currently underway since 2020. Each polygon undergoes an approval process by the site RPM. A limited number of sites do not yet have boundary polygon data available, but their attribute data are contained in this feature class.
