Service Description: New Hampshire's rivers and streams comprise one of its most important natural resources, historically vital to New Hampshire's commerce, industry, tourism, and the quality of life of New Hampshire people. It is the policy of the state to ensure the continued viability of New Hampshire rivers as valued economic and social assets for the benefit of present and future generations. The state shall encourage and assist in the development of river corridor management plans and regulate the quantity and quality of instream flow along certain protected rivers or segments of rivers to conserve and protect outstanding characteristics including recreational, fisheries, wildlife, environmental, cultural, historical, archaeological, scientific, ecological, aesthetic, community significance, agricultural, and public water supply so that these valued characteristics shall endure as part of the river uses to be enjoyed by New Hampshire people (RSA 483:1). To complement and reinforce existing state and federal water quality laws, and maintain instream flows along protected rivers, or segments thereof, in a manner that will enhance or not diminish the enjoyment of outstanding river characteristics pursuant to RSA 483:1. It is also the intent that the scenic beauty and recreational potential of such rivers shall be restored and maintained, that riparian interests shall be respected. Coverage update on 7/31/2018. Description:

Clip of NH Designated Rivers assembled from the following NHGS 2022 shapefiles: NHDFlowline single-line, NHDArea, and NHDWaterbody. Intended for display at map scales 24,000:1 or less. Created specifically to support the Rivers & Lakes Program's NH Designated River Corridors Web Map.

Includes the following fields:

FID: Unique, sequential, numeric identification code, auto-generated by ArcGIS software (read only).

Shape: Code defining the shape type (Polyline ZM), auto-generated by ArcGIS software (read only).

Shape_Length: Shape length), auto-generated by ArcGIS software (units uncertain).

CLASS: One of four designated river classes defined in RSA 483:7-a. Classes are limited to: Natural, Rural, Rural-Community, and Community.

STRMORDR: Stream order as defined by NHGS’ 2013 NHDStreamOrder shapefile. Included only for two designated rivers (Lamprey and Oyster Rivers) where Comprehensive Shoreland Protection Act protections are not extended to designated river segments below 4th Order per RSA 483-B:4(XV). Classes are limited to: 3- (3rd Order of less), 4+ (4th Order or greater)

MILES: Shape length, in miles, generated manually through ArcGIS Pro.

RIVERSECT: Sequential, numerical identifier for each Class segment of each designated river listed in RSA 483:15, based on its position along the river starting from the upstream end. Designated tributaries and branches of designated rivers are sequentially-numbered separately.

RIVERNAME: The name of the designated river, including designated tributaries and branches, as listed in RSA 483:15.

LAC: Name of the Local Advisory Committee established for the designated river in accordance with RSA 483:8-a.

RSAREF: The RSA 483:15 reference that describes the designated river section.
