Service Description: The purpose of this map is to investigate the extent of access to nature in Massachusetts. I used spatial data on hiking trails to represent "nature", and mapped out the distance from each municipality to the closest trail. My logic follows that municipalities closer to trails have better access than those farther away. I also overlaid spatial data on MA communities with demographics aligned with those historically prevented from accessing nature -- communities with a high proportion of BIPOC and low income members -- to gauge how well MA serves its marginalized communities in terms of access to nature, and to target areas for improvement.
