Description:

Polygon feature class of proposed wilderness, special management area and mineral withdrawal area identified in Congressman Scott Tipton's proposed San Juan Mountains Recreation and Wilderness act (2019) and originally in Senator Michael Bennet's proposed San Juan Mountain Wilderness Act of 2018 (formerly Senator Michael Bennet's proposed San Juan Mountain Wilderness Act or 2016, formerly Senator Mark Udall's proposed San Juan Mountain Wilderness Act 2011 and formerly Congressman John Salazar's proposed San Juan Mountains Wilderness Act of 2009).

05/01/2019 - Modification made to following Proposal Areas: Black Face Wilderness Addition; Last Dollar Wilderness Addition; Liberty Bell Corridor Special Management Area (SMA); Liberty Bell East SMA; Liberty Bell Wilderness Addition; Ophir Valley Area SMA; Sheep Mountain SMA; Sunshine Wilderness Addition; Whitehouse Wilderness Addition (East) and Whitehouse Wilderness Attition (West). Note* - remaining areas not modified in 2019, but included in CongressmanTipton's proposal including: Naturita Canyon Mineral Withdrawal Area; San Bernardo Wilderness Additions (North and South).

Areas modified for 2019 proposal included boundary adjustments based on 300 ft buffers to specific roads adjacent to proposal areas and 150 ft buffers to specific motorized and mechanized trails adjacent and interior to proposal areas. All modifcation details documented in Attribute Field: "Modification_Tipton_2019".

05/13/18 - 09/19/18 - 5/13/18 -Whitehouse Mountain East addition boundary was modified to buffer Switzerland Ditch headgate by 150', split a portion of the Liberty Bell Special Management Area our as the Liberty Bell Corridor to allow for route movement of the Hardrock 100 foot race, and split out a portion of the Sheep Mountain Special Management Area as the Ophir Valley Area, to allow for potential designation of user created mountain bike trails; 9/6/18 -buffer the Switzerland Ditch diversion point from Wilson Creek by 50' and buffer 200 feet from forest boundary/private land along the Last Dollar addition; 9/19/18 - adjust the northwest corner of the Sheep Mountain Special Management Areas in the San Juan National Forest to remove private mining claim parcel and allow access to mine adit on NFS land for future abandoned mine land reclamation work.

2/13/2018 - 3/22/1028 - Sheep Mountain Area northern boundary adjusted to incorporate acquired previously private land, split off area identified as Ophir Valley along northern boundary for future consideration of user created mountain bike trails. Whitehouse Mountain - buffer current delineation of Dallas trail (200) and Oak Creek trail (207) by 50 feet either side of centrline and removed areas from proposal that fell within the buffer. Black Face addition - buffered current delineation of Lizard Head Trail (505) by 50 feet and adjusted porposal to eliminate areas within the buffer. Liberty Bell - buffered Liberty Bell Trail (870) by 300 feet. Used lower elevation edge of buffer to delineate "Liberty Bell Corridor" between lower edge of buffer and existing wilderness boundary as a separate portion of the Liberty Bell East Special Management Area.

11/30-12/01/2017 - adjusted 04/14/2016 version of Whitehouse Mountain East addition to avoid avalanche control areas used by Ouray Silver Mine, and buffered 500 feet west of San Miguel/Ouray county line to avoid vein where potential mining activity by Ouray Silver MIne may occur in the future. Boundary adjustments per direction of John Whitney, Senator Bennet's staff.

03/02 - 04/14/2016 - adjusted 04/11/2014 version of proposal to incorporate updates to public land survey system which adjusted township/range/section lines and forest boundaries, updates to landownership since 2013, and updates to road and trail data. Updates resulted in changes to Liberty Bell proposed addition, Sunshine proposed addition, Naturita Canyon Mineral Withdrawal area and Sheep Mountain Special Management Area.

4/11/2014 - replaced Liberty Bell polygon with two polygons created in 2013.

June 2013 Liberty Bell area split into proposed wilderness and proposed special management area by Janice Wilson.

Nov, 2011 Boundary Adjustments made per direction of Scott Miller, staff for Senate Energy Subcommitte: - expanded exclusion in Waterfall Canyon per Steve Johnson attorney for Ophir and Scott Miller (Sheep Mtn) - expanded exclusion around Hidden Lakes Estates (Sheep Mtn) - cherry stem Vandeveer Ditch (Sunshine) - cherry stem Carr-Waddell/Adams Ditch (Liberty Bell) -exclude Royer Gulch debris flow ( Liberty Bell) - exclude Weehawken ditch intake (Whitehouse Mtn) - exclude Potosi Peak avalanche control area (Whitehouse Mtn)

09/9-10/09 edit by C.Howe to San Bernardo North and South to adjust eastern boundary higher up the slope above highway; Sheep Mountain Special Management Area to pull boundary away from Hidden Lakes subdivision and access road, to align northwest boundary along topographic break, and to exclude Waterfall Canyon water development for Ophir; Liberty Bell adjustments along southeastern edge. Edits as directed by John Whitney, Congressman John Salazar's staff in the Durango Office.

082709 edit by C. Howe to Whitehouse wilderness addition proposal to eliminate buffer around what was determined to be an incorrect location of Miller Mesa Road 852.0. Edit resulted in 7 acre addition to the Whitehouse wilderness addition (east).
