Service Description: The Water24k_Poly feature class of the North Dakota State GIS Hub is a polygon layer of hydrographic features intended primarily for cartographic representations of water features in North Dakota. The original data were derived from the National Hydrographic Dataset and were modified to make it easier for making maps and displaying the data through the use of standard fields that have been developed by the NDSWC over the last 20 years. Lakes have been merged, for example, in areas where roads split them but are connected under the roadbed. Rather than being stuck with the cryptic codes found in the NHD shapefiles, these codes were represented through additional fields with simple descriptions of features making it easier to develop a map or graphic representation. Closure lines have been included to partition out bays. This layer is intended to be draw without boundaries, relying on the shorelines and boundaries provided in the _Line layer. In this way, the bays, for example, will be shown as a continuous polygonal area without a line across the mouth of the bay. This dataset is in no way intended for hydrologic analysis, only cartographic display and representation.

Description: This cartographic representation was derived from the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) due to the NHD being the primary, federally recognized hydrographic layer for the United States. The National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) is a feature-based database that interconnects and uniquely identifies the stream segments or reaches that make up the nation's surface water drainage system. NHD data was originally developed at 1:100,000-scale and exists at that scale for the whole country. This high-resolution NHD, generally developed at 1:24,000/1:12,000 scale, adds detail to the original 1:100,000-scale NHD. (Data for Alaska, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands was developed at high-resolution, not 1:100,000 scale.) Local resolution NHD is being developed where partners and data exist. The NHD contains reach codes for networked features, flow direction, names, and centerline representations for areal water bodies. Reaches are also defined on waterbodies and the approximate shorelines of the Great Lakes, the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and the Gulf of Mexico. The NHD also incorporates the National Spatial Data Infrastructure framework criteria established by the Federal Geographic Data Committee.
Copyright Text: The North Dakota State Water Commission compiled this version of hydrographic linework in order to simplify and speed the simple display of water features in North Dakota. The NHD is designed primarily for GIS analysis and therefore becomes cumbersome for simple symbolization and display. US Geological Survey - original linework development of the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) with stewardship of the NHD for North Dakota being maintained by the ND State Water Commission and the ND Dept of Environmental Quality.
