Service Description: Data set showing known and reported abandoned underground and surface coal mine locations in North Dakota. WARNING! Abandoned Mines are Dangerous! The types of hazards that may be present are: Open Shafts, Unstable Rock and Decayed Supports, Deadly Gases, Lack of Oxygen, Explosives and Toxic Chemicals, Horizontal and Vertical Openings, Highwalls and Open Pits. STAY OUT! STAY ALIVE! Before developing an area where abandoned mines are a possibility, a site evaluation should be conducted by a qualified engineering or drilling firm. Exploratory drilling, when conducted properly, is the best method to determine whether an area is undermined. Counties with known abandoned mines include: Adams, Billings, Bowman, Burke, Burleigh, Divide, Dunn, Emmons, Golden Valley, Grant, Hettinger, McHenry, McKenzie, McLean, Morton, Mountrail, Oliver, Renville, Slope, Stark, Ward, and Williams. For more information, please contact the ND Public Service Commission, Abandoned Mine Lands Division.

Description:

This feature class was developed from historic mine maps that were scanned and georeferenced. Additional mine locations were derived from NDGS Biennial Reports (1902 & 1912), the USGS GeoCommunicator web site (National Mine Land Inventory layer), and USGS 7.5 Minute Quadrangles. Portions of the mine locations are not verified and portions of the mines may be the same mine but operated under a different name during different time periods. Metadata was not available for the data from the USGS GeoCommunicator web site and mine locations from this USGS data set appear to have significant variability compared to known mine site locations.
