Service Description: Consistent with the mission of the Connecticut Geological Survey and in support of the USGS National Geological and Geophysical Data Preservation Program (NGGDPP) and Earth Mapping Resource Initiative (Earth MRI) program priorities, this work preserves information on Connecticut mining sites and makes this data openly available to the public. In addition to its contribution to National Assessment of Critical Minerals, this work supports the Connecticut economy, land use planning for conservation & development, pollution prevention, hazards assessments, and cultural preservation. CTBedrockMining2022.gdb is suitable for geologic and environmental mapping and analysis purposes at 1:24,000 scale. Note that many sites recorded in this database are located on private property and no permission is inherently granted to visit them. Any physical access to these sites is limited to the land owners permission. This material is based upon work supported in part by the U.S. Geological Survey National Geological and Geophysical Preservation Program under Grant No. G20AP00071-01.

Description: The Connecticut Bedrock Mining Sites Database is a comprehensive inventory of bedrock mines and quarries produced for the State of Connecticut, and also supports critical minerals information development for the NGGDPP and Earth Resources Mapping Initiative. The database is a wholesale update of mining records in State Survey files, and includes enhancements to site location and commodity data, reconciliation of duplicate sites and other attribute information, as well as identification of 426 additional sites not previously recognized or located. Extensive research and field visits were conducted by the project team, with a minimum site identification area of five square meters. Attribute information includes location, commodity, activity status, host rock, citations, and validation method. The geodatabase is a synthesis of modern and historic data, incorporating Survey archival information and mine plans, scientific reports and citations, landscape analyses and field inspections for 1070 mining sites in Connecticut as of the year 2022 (ver. 1.01).

Updated and new attribute information for many records came from historical aerial imagery (available at http://magic.lib.uconn.edu/mash_up/aerial_index.html and through the historical imagery function in google earth pro), historical mapping (obtained through the Library of Congress digital archive), 2016 lidar (available at https://cteco.uconn.edu/data/lidar/index.htm), 2020-2022 field checks, mine and quarry pages available at https://www.mindat.org/ and https://www.msha.gov/ , mine and quarry videos accessible through https://www.youtube.com/ , town tax and property records, and additional references in the reference list below.
