- Participant_Information (type: esriFieldTypeString, alias: You are invited to take part in research being conducted at the University of the West of England, Bristol. Before you decide whether to take part, it is important for you to understand why the study is being done and what it will involve. Please read the following information carefully and if you have any queries or would like more information please contact:
Dr Nick Addis, School of Social Sciences, University of the West of England, Bristol.
Email: nick.addis@uwe.ac.uk Who is organising and funding the research?
The project is being led by Dr Nick Addis, a Senior Lecturer in Criminology at the University of the West of England, Bristol. This project is funded and supported by the University of the West of England's Vice Chancellor Early Career Researcher Development Awards 2023-2025.
What is the aim of this research and why have I been invited to take part?
The aim of this research is to investigate student experiences and perceptions of safety in Bristol, and to explore the characteristics of unsafe spaces and the impact on students' lives. As a UWE Bristol student, you have been asked to take part in this research so that you can share details of your experiences on this, to help enhance our knowledge of this topic, and to help inform action that can be taken to make students feel safer in and around Bristol. Such action may include (but not necessarily be limited to):
• Contacting on-campus police at UWE Bristol with a view to sharing this with the relevant Neighbourhood Policing Teams of Avon and Somerset Police;
• Contacting Bristol City Council/Keeping Bristol Safe Partnership with a view to feeding back the findings and discussing what action can be taken as a result;
• Contacting the Safeguarding Team at UWE Bristol to feedback the results and discuss what action can be taken to address findings raised.
The survey should take approximately 25 minutes to complete.
Please Note: If you think or feel that answering questions about your perceptions of safety in and around Bristol, or your experiences of crime or instances where you felt unsafe may cause you distress, please consider if participating in this research is right for you.
Do I have to take part?
No, taking part in this research is entirely voluntary. It is up to you to decide if you want to volunteer for the study. You are also free to withdraw your data by closing the survey at any point, or up to 14 days following completion of the survey. Within the consent form, you will be asked to create your own personal identifier code, made up of your initials, followed by the last three digits of your phone number. Should you wish to withdraw your data following completion of the survey, you will be able to e-mail the lead researcher (nick.addis@uwe.ac.uk) within this timeframe, with a copy of your unique identifier code, to request that your data can be withdrawn from the research. At this point all of your research data will be securely redacted and destroyed. You must be aged 18 or older to participate in this research. Please be aware that your decision of whether to participate in, or withdraw from the research will in no way impact upon your future treatment by the researcher.
What will happen to me if I take part and what do I have to do?
If you agree to take part, you will be asked questions about your perceptions of, and experiences of, safety in and around Bristol (including both on and off UWE campus). The survey will also ask you to identify specific locations within Bristol that you have found safe or unsafe, and to comment on the factors that contributed to these locations feeling safe or unsafe. Please be aware that the survey will include some questions about your own experiences of crime and/or feeling unsafe, however, please note that you do not have to answer any question that you do not wish to. The survey is expected to take approximately 25 minutes. The researcher is experienced in the subject matter and sensitive to issues it may raise, and further support available is signposted below.
What are the benefits of taking part?
This survey will help shed light on students' perceptions of safety in and around Bristol and how these perceptions impact on students' behaviour. Your participation in the survey will also contribute to greater knowledge of the factors that contribute to specific locations feeling unsafe. It is anticipated that enhancing our knowledge of this will help in the identification of recommendations to enhance students' experiences and feelings of safety within Bristol, creating a healthier (and safer) community for everyone.
What are the possible risks of taking part?
It is not anticipated that there is any significant risk to you through taking part in this study. However, it is appreciated that answering questions about your perceptions of safety in and around Bristol, or about your experiences of crime or instances where you felt unsafe may have the potential to cause you distress. Therefore, if you feel uncomfortable at any time you can choose to stop filling out the survey. You will also be able to withdraw from the survey up to 14 days following completion of the survey. If you need any support during or after the survey, the researcher will be able to put you in touch with suitable support services (which are also detailed below). The researcher is experienced in conducting surveys and is sensitive to the subject area. The survey has been designed with these considerations in mind.
What will happen to my information?
The online survey will not ask you for any personal identifying details – for example, it will not ask you for your name or student number. The only personal information that will be asked of you will be general demographic data, specifically, your: age bracket, sex and gender, ethnicity, level of study, college you are based in, where you live during term time, and the campus you predominantly study at. Therefore, your responses will be fully anonymous. The researcher will ensure that all the data is de-identified, meaning there is no way that anyone would be able to identify you from your answers, even if you provide any identifying information by accident.
The only people that will have access to the data is the lead researcher for the project, Dr Nick Addis, and one-two student researchers who will be involved in the data analysis process and writing up of literature reviews and findings. The anonymised dataset may also be made available to potential research journals should they request access to this dataset.
The data will be stored on a secure, protected folder that will only be accessible by the lead researcher and student researcher(s). The data will be analysed in bulk and not participant by participant which will further ensure anonymity of the participants.
The findings of this research will be written up for publication in professional academic journals and presented at academic conferences. It will not be possible to identify individual's results in any publications that result from this study.
Your data will only be stored for the duration of the project, once the project is complete and all reports/journal articles/presentations have been published/delivered, all data collected will be securely destroyed.
Is my data confidential and held securely?
The personal information collected for the study will be processed by the University of the West of England in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation as applied, enacted, and amended in UK law. Your data will be held securely, and it will not be made available to any third party unless permitted or required to do so by law. Your personal information will be used/processed as described on this participant information sheet. You have a number of rights in relation to your personal data.
All personal data is processed in accordance with the applicable UK data protection legislation. The Data Controller is the University of the West of England. For data protection queries, please write to the Data Protection Officer, UWE Frenchay Campus, Coldharbour Lane, Bristol, BS16 1QY, or dataprotection@uwe.ac.uk. The privacy notice can be found here: Privacy Notice.docx
