Small drainage lines and water pipelines were identified as streams with a null stream order, or with a stream order equal to 0 or 1 and a Null or Blank name. These were removed. A Buffer field was added and populated with the values below. Stream widths were determined by random sampling and measuring aerial imagery. The average was taken for each stream order and divided by two for the buffer field (to apply to buffer from the stream centerline).
<table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" style="width:753.0pt; Non-perennial waterways were identified by filtering the buffered hydrolines and checking urban lakes and ponds against known persistent waterways to identify variances. The final output provides a dataset of all non-persistent water.

NOTES ON USE

Quality: This dataset has been derived from the NSW Government HydroLines dataset, which informs the calculation of stream order for water regulations in NSW. It is considered an authoritative source. Stream widths were determined by random sampling within the extent of the dataset (ACT) using aerial imagery commissioned by the ACT Government. Doing so enabled more accurate conclusions of stream widths relevant to the local conditions than would be possible through reliance on research, which is often conducted internationally in a vastly different ecosystem and landscape. Intermittent waterbodies were sourced from the ACT Government’s authoritative Urban Lakes and Ponds dataset and vetted against known persistent water areas.

Limitations: Deducing stream width from stream order is difficult, due to varying baselines for classifying stream order around the world. This has been mitigated by using aerial imagery of the sample area to inform mean stream width, ensuring the results are relevant to the area of interest. This approach makes the data and conclusions incomparable to other methods or areas. Only the most recent aerial imagery was used, which means stream widths are relevant to the conditions at the time of capture only, while in reality it is known stream widths can vary considerably through time (e.g. through drought).

The dataset is derived from NSW Government HydroLines data, which is governed outside the ACT. Care should be taken when comparing with ACT data, as assumption and values may vary. Stream orders have been used relative to each other in the creation of this dataset, and with comparison to the study area. With this in mind, stream orders may be useful for comparing objects within the dataset, however should not be used for comparison outside the dataset due to lack of knowing the calculation methods. (i.e. it would be inappropriate to analyse the dataset using assumptions based on stream order discussed in external research). Further clarification on the calculation of stream orders may be sought from NSW Government.

Data refinement: Further iterations of this dataset may improve the accuracy of polygons by considering new methods for mapping hydrolines and stream flow. Further research may assist in improving or validating calculations of stream order and stream width. The dataset may be updated to reflect changes in built form, including stormwater infrastructure and waterway assets such as rain gardens. Additional analyses may be useful, such as water volume. Future rainfall and climate predictions could be used to inform flow and drainage under a changing climate. Similarly, a temporal analysis may further clarify the true persistence of a waterway or waterbody through drought years.

SHARING
Licenses/restrictions on use: Creative Commons By Attribution 4.0 (Australian Capital Territory)

How to cite this data: ACT Government, 2022.
