WCC Tracks Metadata – Updated September 2018
TYPE (of track) | Definition/reason |
Accessway | Roading through path |
Shared Use | Shared with other types of users, pedestrians, bikes, cars, horses including 4WD |
Mountain Bike Track | Used for mountain biking and will have mountain bike classification/grade applied |
Road Section | Section of track network on street/road/footpath network, usually connecting major walkways e.g. Northern Walkway |
Walking Track | Used for walking and will have walking track classification applied |
Area Name | Name of the area where the track is located, can be reserve, locality, suburb |
Name Walkway | Name of the walkway – can be primary name it is known by if applicable e.g. City to Sea Walkway |
Name 1 | Name of the walkway – use when a track is known by multiple names/or track section contributes towards multiple walkways e.g. City to Sea Walkway AND Northern Walkway. If track section only has one name use the primary name to ensure there are no blank attributes. |
Name 2 | Name of the walkway – use when a track is known by multiple names/or track section contributes towards multiple walkways e.g. Southern Walkway AND Hataitai to City Walkway AND Cross Country. NB this generally only occurs in Mt Victoria where track sections are used for multiple named tracks. If track section only has one name use the primary name to ensure there are no blank attributes. |

Horticultural Team | Applies to tracks which fall within a horticultural area – only one currently Massey Memorial done under contract to Ministry of Culture and Heritage |
Mowing Team | Applies to tracks which fall within an open grass area which is a mowing site e.g. Maupuia Walkway |
Not Maintained | Tracks not maintained by WCC (PSR) – possibly as decisions to rationalise track network and close sections of track |
Otari | Applies to tracks within Otari which are maintained by the Otari team |
Private | Applies to tracks which are on private land with no agreement to maintain as part of track network, possibly created and maintained privately |
Roading | Applies to tracks on street/road/footpath network and maintained by roading |
Tracks Maintenance Team | Applies to tracks maintained by the PSR Tracks Maintenance Team |
Tracks Maintenance Team/Community Group | Applies to tracks maintained jointly by the PSR Tracks Maintenance Team and Community Group e.g. Makara Peak |

Walking Track Classification | Definition/reason |
Path | Well formed, easy walking, suitable for all ages and most fitness levels. Access on durable surface (concrete, chip seal, asphalt, compacted gravel etc) |
Short Walk | Short Walks shall be well formed and provide for up to one hour’s easy walking suitable for most ages and fitness levels |
Walking Track | Walking Tracks cater for those who want an extended walk that takes from a few minutes to one full-day return. These tracks are usually reasonably easy day trips and are required to be of a standard to enable use by relatively inexperienced visitors with a low level of backcountry skill and wanting a low level of risk |
Tramping Track | Tramping Tracks generally follow the lie of the land and are commonly not formed and cater for including trampers, hunters etc. A few may be suitable for mountain-bikers as well as pedestrians |
Route | Routes are generally unformed and lightly cut and cater for experienced backcountry users who have navigation and river-crossing skills |

Mountain Bike Track Classification | Definition/reason |
Beginner | Also known as Grade 1 - Fairly flat, wide, smooth track or gravel road |
Easy | Also known as Grade 2 - Mostly flat with some gentle climbs on smooth track with easily avoidable obstacles such as rocks and potholes. |
Intermediate | Also known as Grade 3 - Steep slopes and/or avoidable obstacles possibly on narrow track and/or with poor traction. There may be exposure at the track’s outside edge. |
Advanced | Also known as Grade 4 - A mixture of long, steep climbs, narrow track, poor traction and obstacles that are difficult to avoid or jump over. Generally exposed at the track’s outside edge. Most riders will find some sections easier to walk. |
Expert | Also known as Grade 5 - Technically challenging. Giant climbs, narrow track and numerous hazards including dangerous drop-offs, sharp corners and difficult obstacles. Expect walking and possibly bike carrying. |
Extreme | Also known as Grade 6 - Downhill/free ride specific tracks. Extremely steep sections with large drop-offs and other unavoidable obstacles. May include man-made structures and jumps. |

Single Track - Bike Priority | Single track or singletrack is a narrow mountain biking trail that is approximately the width of the bike. Bikes have priority over other users. |
