Service Description: Summary Wallowa County, Oregon Livestock Early Warning System (WC-LEWS) products: 1) Forage forecasts in lbs./acre, 2) forage deviation from 50 year historical mean, and 3) the forage condition index (FCI). - based on National Weather Service rainfall data and forecasts from 07/30/2020. Map Creation: Please note the links to additional information in this section. The PHYGROW/LEWS Mapped Products: These county-wide maps of forecasted forage and forage deviation (from the 50 year historical average) started as estimates of location specific biomass production based on: 1. the plant species surveyed at those sites during 2017 and 2018, 2. their expected response to rainfall as forecast by the National Weather Service's NEXRAD system, 3. the estimated offtake from livestock and natural grazing. To access these data go to the Global LEWS (GLEWS) website hosted by Texas A&M's Blacklands Research Institute, where PHYGROW was created and is hosted. • The PHYGROW survey locations on this map are the same as those on the GLEWS website. The point data were mapped across the county using Ecological Site Descriptions (ESD) from the NRCS Web Soil Survey. Where ESD did not exist for Wallowa County, cells from the 400m NWS NEXRAD Rainfall Grid were used to fill the gap and assigned an ESD value, as follows: 1. All ESD shapes retained their original value. 2. If a cell was covered by some ESD, the spatially dominant ESD value from the covered portion was assigned to the rest of the cell. 3. For cells that did not contain ESD, a nearest neighbor analysis was used to assign an ESD value to NexRad cells based on the dominant value of adjacent cells. Five nearest neighbor iterations were required to cover all of Wallowa County, with higher "uncertainty" around the predictions from shapes with ESD values from the later rounds. However, this can be tracked using the "ESD Ecoclass Source". Note: • Most of Wallowa is covered by ESD of NEXRAD Grid Cells with an ESD Ecoclass Source of "Dominant ESD Value". To determine the likely plant species present and estimate biomass in each shape/record (based on rainfall): 1. If a shape contained a PHYGROW site, it was assigned the species found in that survey. 2. If a shape did not contain a PHYGROW site, but was of an ESD type that did elsewhere, it was randomly assigned the species from a PHYGROW site that occurred within that ESD type. 3. If a shape did not contain a PHYGROW site, and was of an ESD type that did not contain one elsewhere, it was randomly assigned the species from a PHYGROW site that occurred in a similar ESD type.
