Description: The North Carolina State and County Boundary vector polygon data provides location information for North Carolina State and County Boundary lines derived from the best available survey and/or Geographic Information System (GIS) data. Sources for information are the North Carolina Geodetic Survey (NCGS), NC Department of Transportation (NCDOT), United States Geological Survey (USGS), and field surveys conducted by licensed surveyors in North Carolina and neighboring states that have been approved and recorded in their respective counties. North Carolina Geodetic Survey assists counties on a cooperative basis (NC General Statute 153A-18) in defining and monumenting the location of uncertain or disputed boundaries as established by law. Some counties have completed boundary surveys for at least a portion of their county boundary. However, the majority of county boundaries have not been surveyed and are represented by the best currently available data from GIS sources, including NCDOT county maps (which originally came from the USGS) and updated county parcel maps.

Description: Polygons depicting the various MPO and RPO boundaries, covering the entire state of North Carolina. These planning area boundaries, called Metropolitan Planning Areas (MPAs) for MPOs or planning area boundaries for RPOs, represent the geographic areas likely to become urbanized within 20 years. They are the areas that MPOs and RPOs are responsible for conducting long range transportation planning.

Description: The dataset provided includes point data for use in GIS that represents public crossings and private crossings with public access in North Carolina. Only open and inactive crossings are included; closed crossings have been omitted. Attributes for each crossing include the crossing's FRA identification number and the latitude and longitude of the crossing. Crossing location and status were verified by cross-referencing Federal Railroad Administration public crossing database with North Carolina Department of Transportation Rail Division's crossing database, railroad company track charts and aerial imagery. Where in doubt, crossing status has been investigated by contacting the rail company, land owner, or municipality within whose jurisdiction the crossing falls. The attributes are derived directly from NCDOT's Statewide Authoritative Railroad and Highway (SARAH) database.

Description: The dataset provided includes line data for use in geographic information systems that represents all the standard gauge freight and passenger railroad track in North Carolina, and contains the following information: owner, operator, track type, branch, beginning milepost, ending milepost, and in service status. The linework was digitized based on the most recent statewide aerial photography provided by the State of North Carolina. Select segments representing out of service track have been added to the dataset to aid in preserved and future corridor analysis.

Description: An arc layer for visual representation of statewide road centerlines on publically-accessible roads segmented by road intersections and street names. The state road system is comprised of Interstate, US, NC, Secondary Routes, and Ramps. Each arc/record is split where road characteristics change along a route. This dataset supports the Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) data requirements for the Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS). HPMS is a national level highway information system that includes data on the extent, condition, performance, use, and operating characteristics of the Nation's highways. States are required to submit an HPMS report to FHWA annually. This dataset also contains projected routes, generalized locations of routes that will become part of the National Highway System (NHS) when they are built. The non-system roads are consumed and conflated from authoritative sources, including local (i.e. county), state (i.e. parks) and federal (i.e. Forest Service) entities. This dataset is updated daily. Data quality is tracked using the revision document fields (GeoDocType and GeoDocId). Legacy data are coded as not verified in the GeoDocType field. The geometry and spatial location of new data is verified with the most current information available (i.e aerial imagery).
