Description: The Massachusetts Department of Transportation Highway Division Road Inventory contains the spatial linework for all the public and a good portion of the private roadways in Massachusetts, along with roadway attributes covering the roadway classification, ownership, physical conditions, traffic volumes, pavement conditions, highway performance monitoring information, and more. This version has been processed by CTPS to eliminate overlaps among features in the original distributed by MassDOT and to add pavement data, which is no longer attached by MassDOT.

Description: This dataset contains representations of Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) bus stops for the Spring 2017 schedule. The layer was developed by the Central Transportation Planning Staff (CTPS) of the Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO). The primary input sources were the General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS) shapes, stops and stop-times files produced by the MBTA for each quarterly schedule. The shapes file provides a sequence of point coordinates for each route. The stops file provides the coordinates for each transit stop and station. A sequential list of stops for each for each route was extracted from the stop-times file, which provides scheduled departure times by stop for each trip. The stop lists by route were edited to match those obtained from the MBTA's schedule database. Point feature classes were generated from the shape and stop coordinate files, and their features snapped to Massachusetts Department of Transportation 2011 roadway inventory features. Stop points underwent further edits to improve locational accuracy.

Description: This point datalayer shows the locations of schools in Massachusetts. Schools appearing in this layer are those attended by students in pre-kindergarten through high school, based on the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (ESE) school profiles database as of October 10, 2024. Categories of schools include public, private, charter, and approved and unapproved special education. New school points were geocoded to MassGIS' address points and verified using current ortho imagery and individual school websites where needed.The layer is named SCHOOLS_PT.

Description: This dataset contains representations of Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) bus routes for the Spring 2017 schedule. The layer was developed by the Central Transportation Planning Staff (CTPS) of the Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO). The primary input sources were the General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS) shapes, stops and stop-times files produced by the MBTA for each quarterly schedule. The shapes file provides a sequence of point coordinates for each route. The stops file provides the coordinates of each transit stop and station. A sequential list of stops for each route was extracted from the stop-times file, which provides scheduled departure times by stop for each trip. The stop lists by route were edited to match those obtained from the MBTA's schedule database. Point feature classes were generated from the shape and stop coordinate files, and their features snapped to Massachusetts Department of Transportation 2011 roadway inventory features. Shape points for each route underwent further edits to match the path traversed by the route. A polyline feature for each route was then generated from the shape points using the ArcGIS Points to Line tool. Each polyline feature was converted to a route using the CreateRoute linear referencing tool.

Description: The protected and recreational open space datalayer contains the boundaries of conservation lands and outdoor recreational facilities in Massachusetts. The associated database contains relevant information about each parcel, including ownership, level of protection, public accessibility, assessor’s map and lot numbers, and related legal interests held on the land, including conservation restrictions. Conservation and outdoor recreational facilities owned by federal, state, county, municipal, and nonprofit enterprises are included in this datalayer. Not all lands in this layer are protected in perpetuity, though nearly all have at least some level of protection.Although the initial data collection effort for this data layer has been completed, open space changes continually and this data layer is therefore considered to be under development. Additionally, due to the collaborative nature of this data collection effort, the accuracy and completeness of open space data varies across the state’s municipalities. Attributes, while comprehensive in scope, may be incomplete for many parcels.The OpenSpace layer includes two feature classes:OPENSPACE_POLY - polygons of recreational and conservation lands as described aboveOPENSPACE_ARC - attributed lines that represent boundaries of the polygonsThese feature classes are stored in an ArcSDE feature dataset named OPENSPACE that includes ArcGIS geodatabase topology. OPENSPACE_POLY - The following types of land are included in this datalayer:conservation land- habitat protection with minimal recreation, such as walking trails recreation land- outdoor facilities such as town parks, commons, playing fields, school fields, golf courses, bike paths, scout camps, and fish and game clubs. These may be privately or publicly owned facilities. town forests parkways - green buffers along roads, if they are a recognized conservation resource agricultural land- land protected under an Agricultural Preservation Restriction (APR) and administered by the state Department of Agricultural Resources (DAR, formerly the Dept. of Food and Agriculture (DFA)) aquifer protection land - not zoning overlay districts watershed protection land - not zoning overlay districts cemeteries - if a recognized conservation or recreation resourceforest land -- if designated as a Forest Legacy Area

Description: The political boundary datalayer is a polygon representation of city and town boundaries created from arcs developed from survey coordinates extracted from the 68-volume Harbor and Lands Commission Town Boundary Atlas for the 351 communities (cities and towns) in Massachusetts. The Atlas was published in the early 1900's and is maintained by the Survey Section of Massachusetts Highway Department. For communities with a coastal boundary, MassGIS has collaborated with Massachusetts Water Resources Authority and the Department of Environmental Protection to complete a 1:12000 scale coastline. The boundary for the coastline was defined as being the upland side of tidal flats and rocky inter-tidal zones. Note that the 351 communities are the official municipal names, not including "villages" or other sections of towns. This layer contains multi-part polygons, in which islands or sections of municipalities separated by water have all been merged to create one feature per city or town. This layer is the same as TOWNSSURVEY_POLYM but with a generalized coastline for faster map display.
