Description: This feature layer can be used to identify and visualize the locations
of seasonal closures on the State Highway System in Districts 9 and 10.
The Maintenance divisions in these Districts are responsible for implementing these closures due to existing or predicted conditions that can result in unsafe
travel situations for the general public. Adverse conditions generally
refer to winter weather and heavy snowfall resulting in the inaccessibility of
mountain roads for months at a time. However, conditions can also include rare short-term
occurrences such as rockfall, landslides, mudslides, flooding or
earthquake damage.
The higher elevations of the following roads are routinely subject to extended closures during the winter season. A few segments which may close temporarily in situations of exceptionally heavy snow that can create avalanche danger are also included, as they are controlled by gates shown in an accompanying feature layer.
- State Route 4 - Ebbetts Pass in Alpine County
- State Route 88 - Carson Pass in Amador and Alpine Counties
- State Route 89 - Monitor Pass in Alpine and Mono Counties
- State Route 108 - Sonora Pass in Tuolumne and Mono Counties
- State Route 120W - Tioga Pass Road in Mono County
- State Route 120E - Mono Mills Road in Mono County
- State Route 168W - Aspendell Road in Inyo County
- State Route 203 - Minaret Road in Mono County
- State Route 270 - Bodie Road in Mono County
In addition, the layer contains two mountain roads not under the jurisdiction of Caltrans, the maintenance of which however must be coordinated with their linked highways. These are:
- The continuation of SR 120 through Yosemite National Park (commonly referred to as Tioga Road) in Tuolumne County, administered by that unit of the National Park Service
- The unpaved portion of SR 270 terminating at Bodie State Historic Park, administered by Mono County
The attribute table for the feature layer contains the opening and closing dates of some of the roads dating back to the 2010/2011 winter season. This information will be updated on an annual basis.
