Description: The California Department of Transportation’s (Caltrans) five year Interregional Transportation Improvement Program (ITIP) is prepared pursuant to Government Code 14526, Streets and Highways Code Section 164, and the California Transportation Commission’s (Commission) State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) Guidelines. The STIP consists of two broad programs, the Regional Transportation Improvement Program (RTIP) funded from 75 percent of STIP funding and the Interregional Transportation Improvement Program (ITIP) funded from 25 percent of STIP funding. The ITIP is limited to State Highway, intercity passenger rail, mass transit guideway or grade separation projects that facilitate interregional movement of people and goods. The remaining 75% of STIP, known as Regional Transportation Improvement Program (RTIP), is available for a broad array of transportation improvement projects, including improving State Highways, local roads, public transit, intercity rail, pedestrian and bicycle facilities, grade separations, intermodal facilities, sound walls and providing funds to match Federal transportation funds.
