Description:
Purpose: The purpose of these data was to provide an inventory of trails for analysis of the supply of trail related recreational resources to develop the  2022 Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan. These data are of various qualities and level of completeness. Organizations that maintain trails data were contacted between February and November of 2022 to gather these data from open data sites or internal data sources.

Methodology:
Each trail was gathered, inventoried, reviewed then processed using a geoprocessing model which ran through the following steps:
1) Data was transformed into Alaska Albers Projection.
2) Data was queried to remove trails that were outside of the State of Alaska.
3) Each layer was reviewed for duplication across datasets and where possible duplicates were queried out from the organization that was a secondary source. With the limitations of this project not all duplicates were able to be found and removed a more though or review outside of the scope of the SCORP project would be appropriate for improving these data.
4) Attribute fields were standardize to the SCORP data model. A SCORP legend field for trails assigns each trail to one of the following types Water, Winter, Terra or RS 2477. Originally the source data had 33 original trail types. The source organization and URL link was added to the data to get easy access to the original dataset. Regional and organization fields were also added to support developing reports and dashboards.
5) Data was appended to the SCORP trails layer for mapping and analysis.

Notes:
Selected trail systems were buffered and overlaid with park information then compared to cell phone mobility data to analyze use of individual trails. These trail systems included the Caribou Hills Snowmobile Trails, Petersville Area Snowmobile Trails, Chugach State Park, Denali State Park, and a few other areas.
