Description:

The Permian Basin of west Texas and southeast New Mexico has produced more than 30 Bbbl of oil through 2000, most of it from 1,339 reservoirs having individual cumulative production >1 MMbbl. Thirty-two oil plays covering both the Texas and New Mexico parts of the Permian Basin were defined on the basis of reservoir stratigraphy, reservoir lithology, depositional environment, and structural and tectonic setting. The 1,339 significant-size reservoirs in the Permian Basin, defined as reservoirs that had cumulative production >1 MMbbl of oil through December 31, 2000, were each assigned to a play. Play boundaries were drawn for each play; the boundaries include areas where fields in that play occur but are smaller than 1 MMbbl of cumulative production. This data file was generated to illustrate the extent of the Permian Basin as defined by this project. For more information refer to the following publication: Dutton, S. P., Kim, E.
